Example Siteflex Blog RSS feed as seen in FirefoxExample Siteflex Blog RSS feed as seen in FirefoxWe're setting live a few enhancements to our Siteflex generated RSS feeds today for a better Siteflex RSS experience, including:

    • Attached images - for when there are relevant images to attach. This is active for News, Blogs, Events and Pages.

    • Greater accuracy on the RSS Build Date - to give certain RSS readers a better indication on when the feed was last updated.

    • Channel image - an image representing the overall channel itself, this image is grabbed from the latest article with an image attached (assuming there is an article available with an image).

    • Podcastable News, Blog, Event RSS - no special URLs, just use your standard RSS feed where you've attached MP3s to your updates. Usually this will involve using a specific category, setup in Siteflex.

    • Validation - We've put our RSS feeds through W3C validation processes to double check they're still good to go and have updated one or two items to ensure maximum compatibility with third party RSS readers.

Users with certain RSS readers and interfaces will see an immediate benefit of more imagery, more accuracy on when to update and more places where the feeds can be used (ie. iTunes!).

Enjoy the new enhanced Siteflex RSS feeds, now available to all users on all Siteflex sites.

  • Asynchronise your Analytics: Done

    5 August, 2010

Siteflex AnalyticsToday we're giving the go-ahead on the updated Google Analytics code.

After a lengthy testing process to make sure all custom Siteflex Analytics functionality continues working as intended (or work better in some cases now!), we're satisfied the new Async Google Analytics code released earlier this year by Google is a nice improvement.

What does this mean for Siteflex administrators?
The main benefit of this upgrade, quite simply, is that all Siteflex sites will load faster! Of course the benefit is small, but over the course of millions of page loads Siteflex serves up it certainly adds up!

There are also a few new Siteflex-specific enhancements to give you a more broad overview of Contacts logging into your website, for any websites that have login requirements to view areas of content.

The best part? You didn't have to do anything, we've taken care of it all for you.

  • Google Caffeine: How does it affect your site

    Tweet This

    5 July, 2010

Caffeine is Google's 21st Century answer to an indexing system that was slow and stale. It provides 50 percent fresher results for web searches than their last indexing system.

We've built Caffeine with the future in mind. Not only is it fresher, it's a robust foundation that makes it possible for us to build an even faster and comprehensive search engine that scales with the growth of information online.
-Carrie Grimes, Software Engineer for Google

Google's old Indexing system would update it's index by re-scanning the entire web and updating their database in one big hit, which meant there was a significant delay for any website updates to come through.

With Caffeine, Google is still constantly scanning the entire web, but it updates its index in smaller portions more often. This means that when searching in Google you are finding much fresher content sooner.

    Still not making sense?

Just imagine if the painters of the Harbour bridge left covers over the newly painted parts of the bridge and didn't remove the covers until the entire bridge was re-painted, It would be a long while before we got to see a fresh coat of paint. Instead the painters reveal each freshly painted section as soon as a section is finished.

So how does that affect my website?

Caffeine means that Google users will be able to find your newly created, updated and scheduled webpages  much quicker, increasing the traffic to your site and the effectiveness of your analytics.

Now go grab yourself a coffee, write some new content and see how long it takes for Google to index it.

  • Photo Galleries dynamic display options expand

    Tweet This

    18 June, 2010

One of the best advantages of using the Siteflex Photo Galleries module is the array of display options you can utilise to fill your website with the latest imagery from your organisation, automatically.

However, occasionally you may want to keep a gallery out of the dynamic display listings. For example, showing a client a slideshow of mockups, photos taken from a private event or just a collection of embarrassing pictures that the kindness in your heart stops you from letting the world see.

With this in mind we've introduced the Visibility setting to Photo Galleries. You're now able to set individual Photo Galleries to Private to remove them from any public automatic listings. You're still able to embed and link to the gallery as normal.

    Siteflex for Designers

We've also modified the existing latest_galleries content code to show a list of the latest galleries by the date it was created, rather than taking into account the last modified date.

Of course checking out the most recently modified galleries is a cool function too, so we've introduced two new codes to compliment the existing ones, modified_galleries and modified_galleries_list.

If you're worried about all these codes; worry not, they'll be a part of the new Siteflex Editor interface when that launches for all Siteflex users.

For advanced users, related Siteflex Photo Gallery codes are:

    • modified_galleries=NUM
    • modified_galleries_list=NUM
    • latest_galleries=NUM
    • latest_galleries_list=NUM
    • galleries=NUM (list all public galleries in alphabetical order)
