Keep it fresh: Improving SEO with simple content management
Tweet This7 September, 2010
While Siteflex offers a range of very powerful tools to help you improve your search engine optimisation (SEO), ongoing maintenance and fresh content is one of the most basic ways to effectively improve your website's ranking with search engines.
Content
When putting together some new content, it's good to remember that you're not only writing content for your demographic but also the search engines.
Keywords, specific words used to draw people to your site, are good to consider when writing content, but be careful not to get caught in the trap of trying to include as many keywords as possible. Always write your content for your user community first, and search engines second.
Links
Links to your website are just like doors to a room, the more there are the easier it is to get in.
Social media sites are a great way to create links into your website, sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are some of the most commonly used social media platforms, but get creative and think of other ways that you can add doors to your website.
Images
Believe it or not but images contribute to SEO too. While search engines can't immediately interpret the image itself, you can explain the image to search engines through the image title, image file name, alternate text and the image link, so be as descriptive as possible where you can.
Going back to past content where these things may have been overlooked can be a good use of time, and also a good excuse to have another look at the surrounding content too.
Keep It Relevant
As always, though, the most important thing is to keep all content relevant, things that will help give the user a better experience. Try not to fall into the trap of writing content for search engines and only for search engines, or going crazy with social media, potentially approaching becoming spammy.
Consider how each change might be looked upon as being a positive or negative change to the user experience.
Keep It Fresh!Approach fresh content in a sensible way and you'll see rewards in visitor traffic, site usage, and hence search engine ranking.
